Every gasket is junk, from the cork thromastate cover gasket to the cork tappet covers and valve cover. You really get screwed if by buy an engine kit. I have confidence generally in fel pro gaskets. I've done the same thing with my lawn mower as well in a pinch. Worked great, well sorta, would last about a year. But when I was a kid with a mini bike that had a 3 HP briggs I would make a head gasket out of a shoe box lid. I don't make large gaskets generally like a back plate gasket or speciality gaskets like a head gasket. I hate working on something and have to stop because I need a small simple gasket. It is amazing how many small gaskets you can make. I measure gasket thickness by thousands of an inch. The gasket sealer of choice will depend on the gasket surface quality. Heavy gasket sealers are no substitute for an improper gasket thickness and material. But thickness is unimportant to the mechanical nature of the application, within reason of course. For you a timing chain gasket needs to be of medium thickness because the cover can bulge when tightened. I try to stock up on all types of gasket paper so I have a good selection.
Like a head gasket or where machined surfaces have internal tolerances like an oil pump. In some applications thickness is critical. Some are made for cooling systems a some are made for oil resistance etc. Gasket material also need to be the proper composition. Some services utilize a thick gasket where materials are more malabile like the valve cover gasket. Some applications, like the back plate or front plate are finely machined and use a thin gasket. Gaskets need to be an appropriate thickness for the application.
